Findings

In a 4-week study of 20 people with moderate to severe scalp dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, piroctone olamine combined with salicylic acid significantly reduced dandruff (55% improvement), itching (53% improvement), and scalp greasiness (46% improvement). After 16 weeks of maintenance treatment, 90% of participants saw their severe cases improve to mild, with an overall 80% clinical improvement rate.

Methodology

Researchers tracked 20 patients with moderate to severe scalp seborrheic dermatitis over 16 weeks—4 weeks of intensive treatment with a pre-gel and cleansing lotion, followed by 12 weeks of maintenance with the cleanser alone. They measured changes in dandruff, itching, redness, and greasiness using a standardized 4-point scale.
