Methodology

This comprehensive review evaluated the clinical evidence for topical retinoids (tretinoin, retinol, retinaldehyde, adapalene, and tazarotene) in treating skin aging. The authors examined over two decades of clinical trials and found strong evidence that tretinoin (prescription-strength) improves fine wrinkles, mottled hyperpigmentation, roughness, and laxity. Over-the-counter retinol, while less potent, showed measurable improvements in photoaged skin with fewer side effects. The review established retinoids as the gold standard topical anti-aging ingredient, a status that remains unchallenged in dermatology.
